Der Welser FH-Studiengang Bio- und Umwelttechnik beschäftigt sich mit Forschungsprojekten im Bereich Bioenergie. Nun erhielten die Welser Wissenschaftler den Zuschlag für drei neue innovative Forschungsprojekte im Rahmen des EU-kofinanzierten Landesförderprogrammes „Regio 13“.

Am 12. Oktober 2011 wurden von ecoduna und Vattenfall, letzterer ist der größte thermische Energielieferant Europas, eine Algenzuchtanlage zur Nutzung von CO2 aus dem Braunkohlekraftwerk in Senftenberg (Brandenburg, Deutschland) in Betrieb genommen.
